Gov. Dayton to Discuss Buffers Initiative in Worthington, Austin

Across the state, Legislators and farmer groups have been holding buffer discussion and listening sessions the last couple of weeks. The meetings have been a place for farmers and other constituents to voice their existing efforts to protect water quality as well as their concerns with proposed buffer legislation.

Govern Mark Dayton is now jumping into local meetings to discuss the water quality buffers initiative and his proposal to establish an additional 125,000 acres of water quality buffer strips statewide. The legislation (HF1534/SF1537) would require 50-foot water quality buffer strips around Minnesota’s lakes, rivers, and streams.

These public meetings will be held Thursday in both Worthington and Austin, where the Governor will be present with Agriculture Commissioner Dave Frederickson. Members of the press and public are invited to attend.

Farmers are encouraged to attend to represent agriculture, share conservation efforts they are currently doing on their farms and also voice concerns with the legislation. See meeting details below.
