The University of Minnesota and its team of researchers are holding 2019 Research Updates throughout January.
There are six locations scheduled for the 2019 Research Updates: Waseca, Rochester and Lamberton (January 8, 9 and 10 respectively) and Morris, Willmar and Crookston (January 15, 16 and 17 respectively) from 12:30 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. Registration fee is $55 through Jan. 4, 2019, and then $60 beginning Jan. 5, 2019. Online registration, meeting sites and session abstracts can be found on our website at z.umn.edu/researchupdates or onsite registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at each location.
The program will feature research-based strategies to deal with today’s changing pests, diseases, varieties, and nutrient and environmental recommendations. Continuing education units for Certified Crop Advisors have been applied for including: 1 in Nutrient Management and 3 in Pest Management, (additional 1 in Crop Management at Crookston).
“These updates are vital in explaining to Consultants, and growers, how the checkoff investments in research work to improve soybean production,” says David Kee, Minnesota Soybean’s director of research.
Educational Sessions for all locations (except Crookston):
- Integrated weed management – Now is the time! Dr. Jeff Gunsolus
- Updates on emerging challenges with insect management in soybean and corn. Dr. Robert Koch
- A behind-the-scenes look at corn and soybean diseases in Minnesota. Dr. Dean Malvick
- Lessons learned in variable rate nitrogen trials. Brad Carlson (at Waseca & Rochester)
- Managing sulfur in crop species in western Minnesota. Dr. Dan Kaiser (at Lamberton, Morris and Willmar)
Educational Sessions for the Crookston location only will include:

- Sampling to outsmart SCN. Dr. Angie Peltier
- Phosphorus management in the age of nutrient stewardship. Dr. Lindsay Pease
- Small grains variety update. Dr. Jochum Wiersma

- Everything old is new again! Dr. Ian MacRae
