Research importance
Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) remains one of the most damaging pests affecting soybean production in Minnesota. While many growers have relied on SCN-resistant varieties for years, SCN populations are changing, and some can now overcome the most common source of resistance found in commercial soybean varieties. Because of this, Minnesota soybean growers need new varieties with stronger and more diverse sources of resistance.
Findings
In addition to breeding activities, the project provided independent testing of soybean varieties and resistance sources, helping growers make informed seed selection decisions. Results were shared through University of Minnesota variety trials, field days and outreach events. Ultimately, this work strengthens the long-term durability of SCN resistance and helps protect soybean yield and profitability across Minnesota.
