The Lyon County Corn and Soybean Growers proudly participated in the 14th Annual Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational in early February. The annual event brought over 1,300 students from 58 schools to the SMSU campus.  Board members were able to host an educational table to promote Minnesota Soybean and provide education about soybeans.

“For more than 10 years, the Lyon County Corn and Soybean Growers have been dedicated sponsors of the SMSU Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational, supporting our efforts to provide valuable learning experiences for futured agricultural leaders,” said Nathan Polfliet, SMSU associate vice president for advancement. “Their table display is also a favorite among FFA students who stop by between competitions.”

The growers educated students on three different types of soybean diseases using detailed 3-D printed soybean plant models, giving them a hands-on opportunity to identify and better understand common crop challenges. They also brought a trivia wheel to quiz youth on their soybean knowledge. Many of the questions focused on biofuels and key soybean statistics, helping students connect classroom learning to real-world agricultural impacts and the value of soybean checkoff investments.

“It’s always exciting to see students light up when they recognize a disease or nail a trivia question,” said Brad Verly, Lyon County Corn and Soybean Growers chairman. “Events like the Ag Bowl give us the chance to share what we’re passionate about and show these young leaders how soybeans play a role in everything from the field to renewable fuels. They truly are the future of agriculture, and we’re proud to support their journey.”

The Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational continues to provide meaningful educational experiences for FFA members. Lyon County Corn and Soybean Growers remain committed to supporting youth development and strengthening the future of agriculture through outreach, education and engagement.

About the Lyon County Corn & Soybean Growers
The Lyon County Corn & Soybean Growers is affiliated with the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council, a 15-person, farmer-led board that oversees the investment of checkoff dollars on behalf of the state’s nearly 26,000 soybean farmers. The Council is governed by the rules of a federally mandated checkoff program requiring all soybean producers to pay a fee on the soybeans they sell. This money is used to promote, educate and develop market opportunities for soybeans.
