Unbiased Research

Two-thirds of the Council’s funded research projects focused on future problems as the checkoff digs deep to uncover answers today for questions that’ll be asked tomorrow. In FY24, the Council invested checkoff dollars in over 25 agronomic research projects in three project areas – pest management, genetics and other agronomy.

Next Gen Ag is a private, independent company that strives to provide growers with third-party data and had its project titled “2024 Aphid, Plant Health, and White Mold Industry Program Yield Impact in Soybean,” funded by the Council in FY 24.

We are committed to supporting farmers through funding research, developing programs, creating new uses, exploring new markets, providing access to resources and so much more. Each year, Minnesota soybean farmers and their checkoff program invest in over 100 projects. Here are just a few of the projects we’ve chosen to highlight.

Soyfoam – Planting to Protect

The Council spent FY24 investing in the people who protect our communities with SoyFoam TF 1122™, a checkoff investment and fire-smothering agent capable of extinguishing Class A and Class B fires while eliminating intentionally added PFAS chemicals.

Working with Cross Plains Solutions, Minnesota soybeans are playing a part in the solution.

The Next Generation

MSR&PC knows that every little bit helps, which is why we’re continuing to commit soybean checkoff resources to reimburse young farmers who complete the Minnesota Private Pesticide Applicator certification.

Minnesota farmers between the ages 18-45 can apply for the $100 reimbursement. Reimbursement will be available to the first 100 applicants before the Aug. 31, 2025, deadline.

The Road to Uzbekistan

MSR&PC has invested checkoff funds into finding a new market in Uzbekistan for U.S.-grown and Minnesota-grown soybeans. With multiple missions to the country, directors have helped build connections to finalize shipments of U.S. soymeal to Uzbekistan.

About the Checkoff

Minnesota is home to more than 25,000 soybean farmers who grow more than 7 million acres of soybeans. Each time a grower sells soybeans in Minnesota, regardless of the state of origin, one half of one percent of the market price is contributed to the checkoff program. Checkoff dollars are then invested at the state and national level to increase farmer return-on-investment through building markets, developing value-added uses and sponsoring agronomic research.

Enter the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council (MSR&PC). Our farmer-led board first gathered way back in 1973, after the state implemented its first checkoff program.

Tasked with directing Minnesota soybean checkoff dollars, MSR&PC is committed to increasing Minnesota soybean grower profitability through research, promotion and education. Checkoff dollars cannot be used to fund advocacy or political activities.

The national checkoff is mandated by the Soybean Promotion, Research, and Consumer Information Act, which was passed as part of the 1990 Farm Bill. The Council is guided by an elected, farmer-led board of directors who volunteer countless hours to ensure that checkoff investments are maximized.
